Adults' short story competition

Open to writers across the world, aged 16 and over. Taking this quotation from Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park as the story title, writers are encouraged to respond in 2017 words or fewer.

Terms and Conditions: Adult competition

• The competition is open to anyone aged 16 or over

• Entries must be submitted online or by post

• The stories must use the title provided but can be on any subject

• They must be typed and no longer than 2017 words (excluding title)

• Stories should be in English, be the entrant’s own work and should not have been published or accepted for publication elsewhere, including online, and not have won any other competition.

• Entry fee £5 for each story

• You may enter more than one story if you wish

• Closing date: midnight on 28 February 2017

• All stories are judged anonymously andshould not bear your name or any other form of identification

• No changes can be made to stories once submitted

• Entrants do not have to be resident in the UK to enter

• The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into

• The winners will be contacted by email or post and announced at the Jane Austen Exhibitionat the Gallery, Winchester Discovery Centreopening mid-May 2017

• The winning stories will be published on the Jane Austen 200 website

Terms and Conditions: Children competition

• The competition is open to anyone aged 7 to 11 years or 12 to 16 years who lives or studies in Hampshire

• Entries must be submitted online or by post

• The letter must be no longer than 400 words

• The letter should be in English, be the entrant’s own work and should not have been published elsewhere, including online, and not have won any other competition

• You may enter more than one letter if you wish

• Closing date: midnight on 28 February 2017

• No changes can be made to letters once submitted

• The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into

• The winners will be contacted by email or post and announced at the Jane Austen Exhibition at the Gallery, Winchester Discovery Centre opening mid-May 2017

• The winning letters will be published on theJane Austen 200 website
