Join our head Jane Austen guides for this very special retracing of Jane Austen’s funeral procession.
Participants are invited to meet on College Street outside the house where Jane Austen died and lay until her funeral. Then, at the same time, exactly 200 years later, walk as her brothers and nephew did from the house through the Inner Close and into the Cathedral. Her sister Cassandra wrote that she watched from the window as her dear sister left her forever as the procession turned the corner to enter The Close.
As you walk through the Cathedral grounds, listen as the bells toll 41 times, one for every year of Jane’s life. The procession will stop for a moment of reflection and a short reading before entering the Cathedral, where you will be able to pay your respects at Jane’s grave before being seated for readings from her final poems and letters.
Numbers are limited due to the nature of the event.
