For much of Jane Austen’s adult life, Britain was at war with France or America. Soldiers in their red coats were a familiar sight in southern England. Jane’s brother Henry served in the Militia, and all her novels feature military characters. The exhibition looks at life in the British Army between the 1780s and 1815, providing the context for characters such as Wickham, Captain Tilney and Colonel Brandon.
