This entertaining talk by John Mullan will explore the rituals and conventions of Austen's fictional world to reveal her technical virtuosity and her sheer daring as a novelist.

John Mullan is a Professor of English at University College, London. A broadcaster and literary journalist, he writes for The Guardian and reviews for various newspapers and magazines.  John specialises in 18th-century literature and is the author of many books including What Matters in Jane Austen?: Twenty Crucial Puzzles Solved.

This lecture will appeal to all those who enjoy Jane Austen's novels. Audience participation will be invited (though don’t let that put you off!)
