Jane Austen built her novels around families, using them to give her work comedy, tension and drama. In this workshop, we’ll be taking inspiration from Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, which we are celebrating in 2018. There will be a series of exercises to help you write about families and to use family relationships (good, bad, complex and lost) in your work whether you are working on fiction or memoir.

Rebecca Smith’s innovative guide to creative writing, The Jane Austen Writers’ Club: Inspiration and Advice from the World’s Best-Loved Novelist was published by Bloomsbury in 2016. She is also the author of three novels and her first picture book Where's Jane? is published in February 2018. From 2009-2010 she was Writer in Residence at Jane Austen’s House Museum. She lives in Hampshire and teaches creative writing at The University of Southampton.
